Global

The French and the English adjectives global both derive from globe, but somehow the French version does not remember that it has anything to do with the planet, and only means “taken in its entirety“, “without considering details” rather than “relating to the entire world“.

So, in software, a global variable IS a variable globale, but the global operations of a company are not its activités globales but its activités mondiales. This is why the translator must always wonder whether the English word global relates or not to the world in the particular context, and not translate mechanically global or mondial.

Similarly, globalization is best translated mondialisation, and global warming is called réchauffement planétaire.
